Some experiences are too big, too early, or too painful to put into words. Sandtray offers another language. Using a tray of sand and a collection of small figures and objects, you create a scene that gives shape to your inner world, and often reveals what words alone can't reach.
When something painful is held inside, it can feel overwhelming and impossible to solve. Placed in the sand, it becomes something you can look at from a little distance. That bit of space is often exactly what's needed to see the situation differently, and to discover options that the trauma made it hard to imagine.
Sandtray isn't about artistic skill, and there's no right way to do it. You simply choose what draws you and place it where it feels right. The meaning tends to emerge on its own.
I often combine Sandtray with EMDR. Working with the images in the tray while using bilateral stimulation gives us another doorway into the memory network, letting us process trauma through both image and body.
Parts frequently appear in the sand, too. Seeing a protective part take form as a figure can make it easier to understand, appreciate, and help it heal.
Sandtray can be especially helpful if talking about your experience feels stuck, overwhelming, or not quite enough. Many adults are surprised by how much it opens up. It's available as part of in-person sessions in Silverdale.
